PROBLEMS IN THE PAST

“Both of you are from the future?” Grant didn’t believe it and challenged them, “Prove it.”

“I’m not sure how we can prove it,” said Brett.

“Tell me something that will happen soon,” said Grant.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Brett replied.

“Me neither,” said Joe.

“I just have to trust you?” asked Grant.

“Yes,” said Joe.

“We did,” Helen said, and she told Grant how they went to the place where Joe and Brett were building a farm in Meadow Mews.

“Was there anything there?” asked Grant.

“No,” Helen replied.

“I am going to trust you guys, but can’t you see why this story sounds suspicious?” questioned Grant.

“Why would we make something up like this? I mean, what benefit does it have? I just want to go back home.” Tears filled Brett’s eyes as he spoke. He missed Poppy. He missed his farm. He missed Meadow Mews. He wondered what Mayor Allens and everyone else thought about their disappearance. Were people looking for them? Were they searching throughout the Overworld? He couldn’t imagine how worried his friends were because he was missing. He wished he could just go back, but it wasn’t that easy.

“I think I can help you get back home,” said Grant.

“How?” asked Brett.

“When I was building my house, I noticed a strange hole in the ground. I tried to fill it in with blocks, but it never got full. Perhaps that’s a portal back to your time period,” suggested Grant.

“Oh my!” Joe stood up and looked around Grant’s living room. “Where is it? I need to find it.”

Grant walked them to the bedroom. “It’s right outside my bedroom window.” As they clustered by the window in the small bedroom, they could hear a noise at the door.

“Did you hear that?” asked Helen.

Brett wasn’t listening. He was too busy trying to locate the hole from the bedroom window, but he couldn’t see the ground. It was too dark out, and the window was too high.

“Help!” Helen screamed from the living room.

“What?” Franklin called out.

“Zombies,” she said breathlessly. “We are being invaded by zombies.”

Brett dashed into the living room, which reeked of rotten flesh. He readjusted his armor, pulled out his diamond sword and slammed it into the belly of a zombie that stood inches from him. As he struck the beast again, he tried to hold his breath. He was feeling lightheaded, but it was better than smelling the putrid smell that permeated the air of Grant’s small home.

Grant threw potions on the zombies to weaken them as the gang used their diamond swords to annihilate the walking dead that had broken into the home. When the final zombie was destroyed, Grant put his door back on the hinges and pulled out a torch from his inventory. “It looks like all of the monsters are gone. We can go see that hole if you’d like.”

Brett was the first person to bolt out the door toward the hole, but as he reached the spot where Grant had said there was a hole, his heart sunk.
